Objet ERG/KO 000Nous présentons un document rare, la relation du voyage du Capitaine Richard Burton à Salt Lake City et dans l’Utah, en 1860. Ces pages sont précieuses, car elle nous montre également l’un des premiers projets du grand temple de Salt Lake City, légèrement différent dans son architecture du présent temple. Mais aussi deux lithographies montrant non pas un « baptême mormon » mais une cérémonie d’initiation à la Nauvoo Lodge. Mais il convient de rester prudent sur cette représentation, émanant de John C. Bennett alors ex-général de la Légion de Nauvoo, et excommunié de l’Eglise pour conduite immorale. De ce fait Bennett deviendra un véritable Leo Taxil Mormon, mais malgré tout ces anciennes gravures gardent tout leur intérêt muséographique et nous renseigne sur certains éléments de la célèbre Nauvoo Lodge. Le texte nous apprend mille choses sur l’état de l’Utah à l’époque, et sur les difficultés des pionniers.
We present a rare document, the relation of the voyage of the Captain Richard Burton in Salt Lake City and in Utah, in 1860. These pages are invaluable, because it also shows us one of the first projects of the large temple of Salt Lake City, slightly different in its architecture from this temple. But also two lithographies not showing a "Mormon baptism" but a ceremony of initiation in Nauvoo Lodge.
