VIRTUAL MUSEUM OF KOLOB ORDER

Un trésor lithographique SDJ - The LDS treasure of Lithography 1898

Early Mormonism art  in Utah 1898.

The history of the Book of Mormon written by Elder George Reynolds is a true small treasure. We present here the second edition gone back to 1898 and published by the Geo. presses and Q Cannon at Salt Lake City. This book is invaluable because it shows us a series of lithographies due to the first artists of the Mormon Church, who were G.M. Ottinger, W.M. T Armitage, John Held, W.C. Morris enter others. If in Europe the Bible with Gustave Gilded to illustrate its pages, the Book of Mormon to as much of Gustave Doré American whose talent is also remarkable. We can detect in the lithographies presented here for the first time at the date of June 2, 2007 on a French-speaking Web site, influences of the XVIIIe century in the manner of presenting landscapes and monuments. You will also notice that the representation of Marie mother of Jesus in the vision of Nephi is very close to the catholic artistic representation of the same time. Nothing similar exists for example among Protestants! In the same way, Jesus Christ carries an aureole in the purest tradition Byzantine and Roman, at the time, art Mormon was not freed yet from the traditional Christian guns. The lithography which represents the destruction of the town of Zarahemla is very astonishing, in the center of the table, we can see a tank in the purest tradition of the art of the XVIIe century, such as we can see some with the Castle of Versailles, it acts well of the tank of Apollo, with his characteristic sun. The two horses of color black and white is of an obvious symbolic system, which points out the duality, but also the mosaic sett paving of the franks-maçons. It is a covering joint of il of the very evocative artist. This tank seems well to be inspired by a model visible in Versailles, where it is Louis XIV him even which is represented as an Apollo. It is really astonishing to see this artistic knowledge being alive into full c?ur with the Rocky Mountains, in 1898 in Utah! It is still a proof of the exceptional culture of which made to proof the Latter Day Saints, in full Far West, showing an advanced and refined company. We can also observe realistic details concerning the Holy Land with XIXe S., obviously the artists took as a starting point the the reality of the time. The lithography "mothers of Néphites" for its part betrayed an orientalizing influence some. Nowadays the Mormon Church chose new artistic guns, for example the Moroni Captain presented here and that nowadays, is not represented at all like at the time. The influence of the artist Arnold Freiberg was made feel on Mormon Art, since the years 1950. We thus let the Net surfer travel through his worthy old scenes, straight left Mormonisme of the first times the Church and whose each scene is a true treat.
