Il a été découvert dans un bois d’Île de France, par un adolescent et son père en 1982, avec un détecteur de métaux, à environ 12 cm dans le sol de la forêt. Il s’agit d’un équerre et compas miniature, tel qu’on en fabriquait à la fin du XVIIIe s. début du XIXe s. pour les francs-maçons. La présence de cet objet dans un bois peut avoir été le site d’un lieu de réunion d’une loge maçonnique, à l’époque, il arrivait que des loges se réunissent dans des bois à l’abri des indiscrétions et des persécutions éventuelles. Il s’agit d’une très belle pièce de collection, rare, on en connaît peu d’exemple. La taille de la pièce fait bien ressortir la taille de l’objet. Il faut signaler que la piste d’outils d’horlogers ou de précisions est à abandonner, étant donné la fragilité extrême de ces objets, qui ont font des objets décoratifs et non utilitaires.
